Necropolitics of Trans, Intersex, Non-Binary and Gender Diverse Indivdiuals
The assessment of the biological sex of remains by forensic practitioners assists with narrowing down the missing person investigations. This assessment hinges on the assumption of biological sex on a binary, male or female. It is known in medicine and biology that this established fixed binary is not an accurate representation of biological sex. Individuals who present with variation and who do not conform to the preconceived ‘textbook’ sexes (for example, intersex, trans and cis individuals) are disproportionately affected within medico-legal systems. This results in misidentifications, and can delay the return to their loved ones.
